Climate Clod of the week: Lucy Lawless

I haven't done climate clod of the week in a few weeks....oops. However, reader Jack e-mailed me a quote from Lucy Lawless that I have to post.

Posted on the website Mother Nature Network (MNN) is an interview on March 5 of this year with Lucy Lawless. She talks about various things, but then the interviewer asks her this question:

After Climategate and other reports questioning climate change science, many people worldwide are still skeptical about global warming. What would you say to disbelievers to get them to change their minds?

Lucy Lawless answers:

I think the people running climate change denial campaigns are sociopaths. They don't want you to get off the grid in any sense because then you'd be autonomous and they couldn't make you buy their poison.

She didn't actually answer the question. The interviewer asked what she would say to 'disbelievers' to get them to change their minds, but Lucy ignores that and calls us 'sociopaths'. Let's define sociopath.

Sociopath - a person, as a psychopathic personality, whose behavior is antisocial and who lacks a sense of moral responsibility or social conscience.

I doubt she is speaking of anti-social behavior, but she probably is speaking to a lack of moral responsibility or social conscience.

The problem is that many 'disbelievers' actually believe strongly they have a moral responsibility to stand up against the climate change movement. While Lucy Lawless doesn't understand this, some skeptics (myself included) have a social conscience that is disturbed by those who want to suppress new technology reaching the poorest in the world, and are concerned when we see questionable science being used as a political tool. The biggest threat to freedom throughout history has been tyrannical government, and when I see large governmental bodies (think UN) proposing very serious and restrictive measures in order to confront something which isn't certain to exist, I worry not only for myself, but for all society.

You don't have to buy my 'poison' Ms. Lawless, but please don't assume anyone who disagrees with your position is incapable of considering others.

  1. Hmm… If Xena is specialized in killing gods, are we now sociopathic gods bent on the destruction of Earth?
